WHO KNOWS? WHOSE NOSE? ROBBIE BURNS

Beach Buoy did his family tree a number of years ago.

The person with "THE" family photographs had the two below.

No names.

No idea for definite who they are.

They are family.

Could one of the photographs be of Ann Grainger and her Husband David Burns, a Scottish Sailor?

Ann Grainger was Beach Buoy's Great great Grandmother.

Was David Burns the Father of the two sons she had out of wedlock?

A relative says her mother saw the Burns family Bible and it went back to Robbie Burns.

So was David Burns Beach Buoy's Great great Grandfather ?

Is Beach Buoy related to Robbie Burns?

Who knows?

At the time of writing the blog

24 Jan 2021 11-30pm

it is half an hour to 25 Jan 2021 when Burns Night will be celebrated .

David Burns drowned at sea off Hartlepool and Ann died of cancer in the workhouse at Hartlepool.

Beach Buoy plotted  the events in Ann's life as best he could .

They are shown below.

                                 ANN GRAINGER, 1832 – 1901

For those Graingers attached to the same branch of the family tree as myself, Ann Grainger is one of the most important people on the tree. It is because of Ann that we come from Hartlepool. The fact that Ann was an unmarried mother resulted in us being called Grainger rather than her married name. I find it interesting that a decision made back in the 1860’s by a woman in goodness knows what circumstances has led to the aforementioned outcome. I have traced Ann at various stages of her life from various sources. What follows in the information l have at present (June 2008).

16 Nov 1832. Born in Fylingdales (Robin Hood’s Bay.)

21 Sept 1834. Christened (Granger.)

1841 Census. Not yet located.

1851 Census. Ann was in her sister’s (Margaret) house in the Fisherhead Area of Robin Hood’s Bay.

19 Dec 1860. Ann gave birth to Robert Henderson Grainger at Church St. Hartlepool.
(Church St. was East of St. Hilda’s Churchyard and Prissick School.) Some modern maps show this as Manners St. but there is still a Church St sign in the area.

25 Dec 1860. Ann registered the birth of Robert Henderson Grainger.

1861 Census (April.). Ann is living in Robin Hood’s Bay in The Square with her parents, Zachariah & Margaret. Also living in The Square are Ann’s sister; Margaret Grainger (She was a Granger who married a Grainger), brother in law Richard Grainger and their children; William Pearson Grainger (Deaf & Dumb from birth.), Richard Grainger, Margaret Ann Grainger and also listed is John aged 3 months. At this time Robert Henderson Grainger would have been just over 3 months old, as Robert Henderson Grainger did survive and later is shown living with Ann at the moment l think for whatever reason they were passing Ann’s son Robert off as John son of Richard & Margaret. Maybe the two sisters came to Hartlepool before the birth so people would think this was the case? If not; apologies to all concerned.

1863. Ann’s sister Margaret dies aged 36 or 37.

22 April 1864. Ann gives birth to her second illegitimate son William in Hartlepool, 79, Northgate St, Hartlepool.

28 April 1864. Ann registers William’s birth. He is registered as a Grainger but l have been told he would insist he was a Granger and sign his name so.

1871 Census.
21, George St. Hartlepool.
David Burns, 41, Head, Unmarried, Mariner, Scotland.
Ann Grainger, 45,Servant, Unmarried, Housekeeper, R.H.Bay.
Robert Grainger, 10, Unmarried, Visitor, Hartlepool.
William Grainger, 7, Unmarried, Visitor, Hartlepool.

A point of interest is that living at 23, George St. Hartlepool (Next door to Ann & David,) in the 1871 Census was …
David Burns, 61, Head, Married, Mariner, Scotland.
Jane Burns, 62, Wife, Married, possibly from Durham?
Ellen Burns, 5, Granddaughter, Hartlepool.

Ann’s Husband’s Father was called David Burns and he was a Scottish sailor,

9 October 1874. Ann Grainger, 41 marries David Burns 42,Scotish sailor at St. Hilda’s, Hartlepool.

1881 Census.
3, Wood St. Hartlepool.
David Burns, 47, Head, Sailor, Scotland.
Ann Burns, 47, Wife, Laundress, R.H.Bay.
William Grainger, 17, Stepson, Labourer, Hartlepool.
Frederick Harding, 17, Visitor, Shoreditch.

25 December 1881. Ann’s son Robert marries Jane Hodgson at St Hilda’s Hartlepool.

8 June 1883. Baptism of Ann’s first grandchild; Robert Henderson Grainger son of Robert Henderson Grainger & Jane at St. Hilda’s Hartlepool.

16 December 1883. Ann’s grandchild Robert Henderson Grainger aged 7 months is buried at Spion Kop Cemetery, Hartlepool.

22 February 1885. It seems Ann’s Husband; David Burns is lost in a storm aboard the deck boat Margaret and Ann which had set sail from Hartlepool. Press reports dated 2 March 1885 state not much hope for the Margaret and Ann.

28 April 1886. Ann’s daughter in law; Jane Grainger is buried at Spion Kop Cemetery aged 23 years.

1 May 1887. Son Robert Henderson Grainger (Widower.) aged 26, married Ann Elizabeth Shadforth at St. Hilda’s Hartlepool.

30, October 1887. Grandchild Robert James Grainger is baptised, son of Robert & Ann.
(So it is likely that Ann was pregnant with Robert James before Ann & Robert married?)

1 June 1889.  Grandchild Caroline Grainger is baptised; daughter of Robert & Ann.

27 September 1890. Son William marries Biddy Fox. William’s brother Robert is a witness.

1891 Census.
9, Wood St. Hartlepool.
John Burton, Head, Master Mariner, Rochester, Kent.
Jane Burton, Wife, Whitby.
Robert H Burton, Son, 17, Iron Foundry App, Hartlepool.
Mary Ann Burton, Daughter, 15, Scholar, Hartlepool.
Harriet Burton, Daughter, 13, Scholar, Hartlepool.
Ann Burns, 58, Widow, R.H.Bay.

17 July 1891. Grandchild William David is baptised; son of William & Biddy.

18 October 1891. Grandchild Florence Grainger is baptised; daughter of Robert & Ann.

21 December 1892. Grandchild James Fox Grainger is born; son of William & Biddy.

12 October 1894. Grandchild Ethel Grainger is baptised at Lynn St. Methodist Church, West Hartlepool. She is a daughter of Robert & Ann.

20 November 1894. Ann’s cousin Capt. Richardson Pearson; Captain of the S.S. Fylingdale is killed in a fall on board ship in the Black Sea. He is buried at Nicholayev in
Ukraine.

31 December 1897. Grandchild Eva or Eve Matilda Grainger born (New Years Eve.)
Daughter of William and Biddy

26 January 1898. Grandchild Eva (Eve) Matilda Grainger is baptised; daughter of William & Biddy.

11 September 1899. Grandchild Margaret Ann Grainger is baptised; Daughter of William & Biddy.

7 February 1901. Ann Burn (note Spelling.) Widow of David Burn, Merchant Seaman of High Street,Hartlepool, died in The Workhouse, Throston.

PLEASE NOTE, SOME OF THE AGES GIVEN AT VARIOUS YEARS FROM VARIOUS SOURCES DON’T ALWAYS ADD UP. I AM FAIRLY HAPPY THAT THE PEOPLE LISTED ARE THE SAME THROUGHOUT.
