MONDAY 24 MAY 2021. A DAY OFF.

Beach Buoy had booked a Holiday in.

The Vet rang at Noon.

Stubborn Dog was ready to be brought home, or at least his ashes were.

Beach Buoy went to collect them.

He parked up at the Sea Front, his mate at his side.

It was good to have him back.

Beach Buoy relaxed and drifted off to sleep as a horse clip - clopped along the the road near the Village Green,

SEAHOUSES, SUNDAY, 23 MAY 2021.

SEAHOUSES' PIER.

Beach Buoy only ventured onto the beach for thirty seconds or so, to collect a stone for the stack.

BEACH BUOY.

BAMBURGH and CRASTER 22 MAY 2021

Beach Buoy couldn't face the  first weekend without Stubborn Dog.

What would he do when early morning beach time came?

Time to Escape.

Camped up near Budle Bay, Bamburgh.

He didn't go Bamburgh Beach.

Craster.

He collected a stone from the beach.

He will collect a stone from anywhere he travels for the stack and Stubborn Dog.

Craster.

BEACH BUOY.

SEATON SANDS, WEDNESDAY 19 MAY 2021.

Beach Buoy was at a bit of a loose end.

He had been wandering around the house both mentally and physically.

He hadn't planned to return to the beach until he had taken Stubborn Dog up to the stack for the final time.

Then he would go as much as possible to see him, a reason to go, a reason to carry on with the beach.

His ashes should be retuned next week sometime?

He went for a walk.

On auto-pilot, he ended up at the beach.

It was sometime after 6 pm.

He hadn't brought his beach book for notes, he hadn't intended to come.

There were tears when his boots touched sand.

He had come to the beach before as Stubborn Dog slept, but the this was the first time for years and years that he was on the beach as a truly "Dog-less Man."

He wandered to the sea.

He headed south as they always did.

He paused after a while to look at the sea.

Then two paws were up on his legs.

A small black dog with a bright orange ball in its mouth was there, wagging its tail and looking Beach Buoy in the eyes.

'Hello' said Beach Buoy as he gave the friendly little dog a stroke.

The dog trotted part - way back to its lady owner before returning to repeat the action, then again.

The lady owner walked across, smiling and shaking her head in disbelief.

'What a lovely Dog.' said Beach Buoy .

They went North, he continued South.

He headed for the stack.

A stack that was going to be needed a lot earlier than Beach Buoy had planned.

He added some stone and gave it a tidy.

He paused as he often tends to do, looking out to sea.

He looked at is shadow.

For the briefest of moments, the small shadow to his left threw him.

It was just the shadow of a clump of dune grass, so often it would have been his little mate's.

He took a photograph, it is shown above.

He headed back.

The lady with the friendly dog was stood talking to some beach friends.

Beach Buoy passed at a distance.

After a while a ball bounced onto his leg.

The lady had thrown it for her dog and scored a direct hit.

Beach Buoy just carried on.

There was a commotion in the car park.

Police Van.

Ambulance.

Three Coast Guard Trucks.

MONDAY 17 MAY 2021

Beach Buoy had put Monday as a Holiday.
He had intended to have a perfect day with his mate; Stubborn Dog.
They were up and about at 4am.
After an early morning look at the Little Tern Site
He went and parked down the sea front...

It was clear the day wasn't going to be action packed, Stubborn Dog was too ill.

Beach Buoy sat watching the sea as he mate slept on and off on the van's back seat.
They went back to the house.
It was agony seeing the dog so out-of-sorts.
He wouldn't sit where he normally would.

Beach Buoy was going a bit bonkers, watching his mate breathe  what he thought could be his last breath.
They had to get out.
They went to the Headland.

Stubborn Dog slept.
Beach Buoy watched the sea.

Other things took place which made it clear that it was time to let go.

Before the day was done, Stubborn Dog was at Peace.
Beach Buoy worried if he had made him suffer more than he needed.
If so it was only because he knew it would the hardest of things to be without him.
Farewell....
How can such a little dog leave such a big empty space?

BEACH BUOY.

SUNDAY 16 MAY 2021.

Stubborn Dog has been laying and sleeping in more and more unusual places once he had become poorly.
He would normally be an arm's length away from Beach Buoy at night.
Beach Buoy woke at 3-55am and headed for the smallest room of the house.
Stubborn Dog was laid across the doorway of an unused bedroom.
The little Dog was wide awake.

Beach Buoy bundled him up and carried him downstairs.
Beach Buoy boiled a kettle for a beach walk coffee.
Deep down he knew the "Beach Walk." would most probably end up as a sit in the van.
It had been hard watching little Stubborn Dog deteriorate so quickly, too quickly.
It felt as if  Beach Buoy had watched his mate die a dozen times or more.
The Vet had prescribed extra pain-killers with the sentence
"Enjoy him over the weekend." echoing around.

Beach Buoy placed Stubborn Dog on to the back seat of the van.
They set off for the sea front; it was 4-18 am.
Beach Buoy wiped spots of rain from the windscreen and some big fat tears from his eyes.
They parked up opposite the Village Green at 4 -25 am.

Stubborn Dog was already snoring in his favourite spot on the rear seat.
It was around forty minutes to sunrise.
There was lots of low cloud.
It would most probably be a no-show sunrise.
Beach Buoy lit up some coloured lights in the van.
It began to rain heavily, rain pitter-patted on the van's roof.

Stubborn Dog sounded and looked comfortable, a rarity in recent times.

A grey sea rumbled under a grey sky.
Mid-Grey ships dotted the horizon.

Maybe only people who had made a special bond with a dog would understand the sense of hopelessness and desperation that comes with watching a bundle of life and loyalty fade away.
Others would say
"Its only a Dog."

Beach Buoy sat on the floor of the van as he held Stubborn Dog's front paws.
He sobbed and sobbed as he told the dog that he was so very sorry.
That he loved him.
He reminded him that they were going to write a book together, go to so many places.
There would be no point if his co-pilot, co-author and friend wasn't going to be there.
No point at all.
He sobbed more and more.
Deep down he knew that this was their goodbye, no matter when farewell should come.

Beach Buoy was happy his mate was comfortable.
He drank gulps of hot coffee from his thermal cup.

Early morning random cars passed along  the seafront as a ship sailed in between The Gares.

A Cyclist in racing colours, sped along the promenade.
Beach Buoy looked in the van's mirror and watched as two Belisha  Beacons flashed out of sync with one another.

4-55 am Stubborn Dog woke.
Beach Buoy opened the side door of the van for him.
The dog sniffed at the damp sea air.

They went for a short walk / carry.
A walk.
 A wee.
 A look at the sea.
The rain had stopped.

Beach Buoy held Stubborn Dog close as they looked at the sea.
The dog seemed so distant, no matter how tightly he tried to hold him.

Beach Buoy carried Stubborn Dog back to the van.
He wrapped him in blankets.
It looked like the end, the dog looked so poorly.
Beach Buoy drove around, touring old haunts for maybe one last time?

They ended back up at the car park at Seaton Carew.

Beach Buoy placed his friend on the Promenade Wall, they watched The Little Terns.
It was 6-44 am.
They returned to the van.
Beach Buoy sat in the driver's seat  as Stubborn Dog went into sleep mode once more.
Some of the 7 am club were already heading along the Promenade, thus giving The Little Terns beach space.
Mari the big friendly poodle trotted by with her white scottie dog side-kick.
Their owner raised an arm of recognition to Beach Buoy.
He had been informed about Stubborn Dog's condition the day before.

Beach Buoy went to the side door of the van.
He opened it to let Stubborn Dog sniff the sea air once more.

A late arrival for the 7 am club came along.
Beach Buoy calls the Dog, Chocolate Pudding.
The Brown Dog some times wears a yellow raincoat transforming into Chocolate Pudding and Custard.

Word must have gone round the 7 am club.
"I'm so sorry about your Dog."
The story was told.
Chocolate Pudding was at Beach Buoy's legs, receiving a good neck scratch.
"She Loves Cuddles."

Time to go.

They headed to Seaham later that day.
Stubborn Dog slept as Beach Buoy
walked the beach as he tried to file things correctly in his head.

A photograph of the whole hole is the law.

Now that is a Stack!

He headed back as the whole beach seemed to be searching for lost car keys.
They headed back.

Stubborn Dog sat at the top of the staircase, watching.

Later that night they returned to the beach, with a son in law and his dog in tow.
Beach Buoy took them to the stack, giving instructions and obtaining promises.
"Stubborn Dog is going there."
" I am going there."
"Don't let me down"

They headed back.
Beach Buoy carried Stubborn Dog,
BEACH BUOY.

SEATON SANDS, HARTLEPOOL. SATURDAY 15 MAY 2021..

Beach Buoy woke at 5-20 am.

Stubborn Dog was asleep and stayed asleep.

Beach Buoy headed for the beach alone, albeit reluctantly.

He reached the car park at 6-08 am.

The Sea rumbled.

 The Little Terns chattered loudly.

There was a breeze off the sea.

It had just been or was about to be, high tide.

He walked the strip of wet sand that lay between the sea and the strand line, heading south.

He headed up to the dunes and went on to stack the stack.

He had made a thermal cup of coffee.

Warm gulps of coffee went down well, the breeze off the sea was just as welcome.

He turned to head back on the now narrow beach.

The 7 am club approached.

A Dog-less Beach Buoy stuck out like a sore thumb.

He had already avoided distant contact with distant wave lady and her mother.

He carried on...

"Where's the Pup?" the story was told....

"So sorry."

Compassion shown, then off Beach Buoy went.

He headed back to the van.

Chocolate Pudding went by and came for a scratch and rub.

"She loves a cuddle!"

said her owner, a late arrival for the 7 am club.

She didn't ask about Stubborn Dog, she must have known something was wrong.?

Chocolate Pudding trotted off before returning for seconds.

Beach Buoy headed to the van.

Warnings signs have been placed on the promenade wall to warn people  of the Little Tern nest site.

A dog-less man walked the beach.

Later, Stubborn Dog came along for a drive in the van in his bed.

He looked well, he isn't.

SEATON SANDS, HARTLEPOOL. FRIDAY, 14 MAY 2021. (REFLECTION.)

What do you do?

Do you try to carry on as normal?

Do you share how it is?

Do you spend precious time away from Stubborn Dog to even write the blog?

He might have ages left, he might have days?

Strange times.

It was Friday Evening.

Beach Buoy and Stubborn Dog arrived at the beach at 6-20 pm.

The breeze was off the sea.

The tide had not long turned from high.

Beach Buoy carried Stubborn Dog to the water's edge.

It wasn't a long walk, thanks to the height of the obliging sea.

Beach Buoy was determined  that they would reach the stack together.

Seemed like Stubborn Dog was determined too.

He walked for a short while.

They rested on the Dune edge a while.

A man passed with a Waggy-tailed Spaniel

(They all are.)

"Evening."

"Evening."

and they were gone.

Beach Buoy carried his little mate up to the stack.

They had a sit and think.....

Stubborn Dog loves the sea as much as the sea loves him.
Beach Buoy loves them both.
He wasn't ready for this chapter of his life to end.

Stubborn Dog wouldn't be walking again this evening.

Beach Buoy carried him back along the water's edge, back towards the van.

Onwards.....

The sand sparkled like never before.

Grains of sand twinkled like stars in a clear night sky.

Beach Buoy drove to the Sea Front.

Stubborn Dog slept.

Beach Buoy drank coffee.

Beach Buoy watched Promenade Life
and nodded off to sleep.

HARTLEPOOL HEADLAND. 13 MAY 2021.

It was a short walk / carry for Stubborn Dog over on Hartlepool's Headland.
He had a treat for tea.

SEATON SANDS. 12 MAY 2021.

Oh for a normal day.

Beach Buoy and Stubborn Dog headed for the beach in search of normal.

A van at the end of the road had had an engine fire, it was a write-off.

Beach Buoy carried Stubborn Dog to the Promenade Wall.

Two volunteers stood nearby, watching over the Little Terns.

There was a slight breeze from the west, but the Wind Turbines stood idle in the Bay.

Beach Buoy carried Stubborn Dog to the beach, passing the cordoned-off area.

The Sun came out as Beach Buoy placed his mate on the sand.

It was the brightest and warmest of sun bursts.

Stubborn Dog wouldn't be walking tonight .
Beach Buoy sat down beside his mate, remembered the past and broke his heart once more.

BEACH BUOY.

TUESDAY 11 MAY 2021. SEATON CAREW, A PRE-VET VISIT.

Beach Buoy carried Stubborn Dog to the sands for a pre- Vet toilet stop.

It was pouring down.

Depending on what the vet said this could be his last beach.

It didn't feel fitting having such a downpour on such a day.

The went to the vets in Middlesbrough.

No results back.

The Vet kept repeating just how serious the situation was.

Beach Buoy broke his heart all of the way back to Seaton

Carew.

MONDAY, 10 MAY 2021.

Stubborn Dog;  still out of action but very bored.

They headed to the beach.

There would be no walk today.

It was just another change of scenery for Stubborn Dog.

The rain and sun did battle.

Beach Buoy sat with his beach mate and a coffee as the rain fell down upon the van's roof.

It was good to have the van sorted.
Hopefully Stubborn Dog will soon be too.

BEACH BUOY.

SUNDAY 09 MAY 2021.

Greatham Creek.

Took Stubborn Dog for a carry ; a change of scene.

He is bored and not well.

They didn't stay long.

Fast forward to 4-20 pm.

Beach Buoy headed to the beach, alone and on foot.

As he passed the Cricket Club someone had just reached a century, applause rang out.

Spots of rain began to fall as he reached the beach car park.
It was 4-30pm.
He headed for the sea.
It looked like the tide had turned around an hour ago , The strand line and water's edge were close but growing ever more apart as the tide receded.
A couple walked the freshly exposed sand, heading North.
Beach Buoy headed South.

A family milled around a lone tent and windbreak.

There was a mild wind from the south west.

Rain drops become more regular as the walk progressed.

More couples headed North , hoping to avoid a soaking perhaps?

Beach Buoy wasn't bothered if it poured down or not.

He stacked the stack at 4-58.

He went to the dune edge and plonked himself down.

The rain eased into gentle spits and spots.

Sand Martins travelled just above him ,as they searched for flies along the dune edge.

A fly landed on Beach Buoy's beach book, as if trying to see what scribbled notes he had written about today's beach visit.

He photographed the finds for the blog.

He sat a while there seemed to be a gull feeding frenzy just offshore?

Four Gulls chased another that had found food.

Three Little Terns headed back to the nest site from their fishing trip.
They are so small; like first draught pencil sketches of much bigger birds.

He headed back.
Two White Scotty Dogs came running over to say hello.
One with a blue collar, the other with a red one.
He gave both dogs a neck scratch and ear rub.
'Sorry!' shouted the lady owner.
'It's OK.'

He left the beach as a horse and Pony arrived.
