SEATON SANDS 13 FEB 2017

AFTER WORK WALK IN DAYLIGHT !
ALMOST HIGH TIDE.
LOTS OF CUTTLEFISH SCATTERED ON THE BEACH,
HADN'T SEEN THEM ON THIS BEACH BEFORE, BUT WELL OVER 100 TODAY ALONG THE LENGTH OF THE SHORE.

WASN'T MUCH POINT LOOKING FOR GLASS AND POT AS IT WAS ALMOST HIGH TIDE . SO I TOOK THE CHANCE TO GIVE THE WAVES THE ATTENTION THAT THEY DESERVE.

SEEMED TO BE SAYING "HELP ME! "

JUST MINUTES TO HIGH TIDE.

BE NICE,
BE SAFE,
BE HAPPY .

GUILLEMOT'S TRAVELS. 11 FEB 2017.

I had been to work.
High tide was was around 3pm.
I hit the Beach around 4 pm after a swift cup of tea.
The sea was wild and roaring.
It was raining, but I really needed the walk.
We had only walked a short while and I noticed a crow showing great interest in a sea bird that was in obvious distress.
As we approached the crow flew off; whisked away in the strong wind, towards the Dunes.

We approached the Bird, the Dog was too interested and I had to keep our distance.
I rang BDMLR for advice on what to do.
They suggested a trip to the Vet.
I took the Dog back to the car.
I emptied one of two large boxes that I have in the back of the Car filled with extra Hats, Gloves, First Aid Kit, Spare everything, Fluffy Towels and other items I would have stashed in a Camper Van kit box ... just need to get around to get the Camper Van.
The wind was strong and the large box was catching the wind like a sail.
I returned to the Bird and had to weigh down the Box and it's lid with a large rock, whilst I played catch the birdie.
After a recent BDMLR seal rescue that I saw, I knew to bring one of the fluffy towels to throw over the bird.
He couldn't fly but he tried to escape on his tummy using his wings like oars; trying to paddle his way to freedom.
It didn't take too long to catch and I was keen not to stress the bird. Safely wrapped in the towel, I placed the bird in the box, removed the weight and placed the lid on.
I went to my usual vets, it was around 4-45pm .. it was shut!
I rang another nearby and explained the situation and they said to bring it to them.
It was a cold day so and I was expecting a chilly Beach walk, I must have looked a bit of a sight going into the Vets with two coats  on, a BIG ! wooly hat and a grumpy dog in tow whilst carry a seabird in a box.
I didn't have to wait long and we were in.
The Vet explained that the Guillemots don't come ashore much unless it's to breed , so it must be ill or possibly exhausted due to the terrible weather and stormy sea.
Wings and feet checked out fine so he decided to feed it and let it rest for a couple of days. He added that if all was well, he will release it back to the Sea and went on to say I could maybe ring Monday to see how it was.
We both agreed what a beautiful bird it was.
I went to reception and asked how much to pay, she said "Nothing.".
So hats off  (Including BIG wooly ones.) to Clifton Lodge Vets, Hartlepool.

I researched Guillemots a little and they reckon an average life span of 23 years... hope he / she has lots more to come.

The only downside was the Dog didn't get the usual long walk.
It had been a long day, I start work 7-30am and take him out beforehand too.

I needed a long hot bath.

Up date.. I rang the vet today 13 02 17
about the bird
they said after initially picking up
it went downhill fast and they had to put it to sleep.
Better that, I suppose than being pecked to death by a Crow.

SEATON CAREW 10 FEB 2017.... by Torchlight.

Yet again.. torchlight Beach walk.
It was really chilly
1 degree C.
Funny how much Brown glass is turning up by torchlight.
I Love the flowery pieces.
The little Green Crest on the piece bottom left says
ARZBERG
BAVARIA
with the letters P and A in the shield.

SEATON SANDS, HARTLEPOOL 09 -FEB -17.

The tide was well out for a torchlit wintery walk on the Beach.

RON.

One Green bottle, laying on the Beach... etc etc etc.

Someone had left these near to the Prom.
Perhaps a part #2minutebeachclean  and left for a child to play with?

The glass.

The rest.

2 favourite pieces from the last 2 nights.
Blue looks like a lighthouse and I really like the shade of green.
Background is a teacup coaster.

SEATON CAREW 08-02-17.

It was Beach by torchlight again tonight.
I just did a prom walk last night and it was odd looking down onto the dark Beach, like it was another world I was missing out on.

I stood for a while facing the Sea tonight looking at all the shades of colour a night sky and lights can bring.
To my left was the Orange glow of Hartlepool, as I rotated 360 degrees this changed to the twinkle of Seaton Carew and a dullness behind the Sand Dunes. The mouth of the River Tees had a soft Amber glow, then out in the Bay we have Rubies on sticks, which are the Tees Bay wind turbines and then the darkest of darks with void of the open Sea straight ahead.
The rain came and in the light of two torches it looked like silver bullets flying past just missing their intended target... it got me in the End.
As I turned to head back a military jet was overhead in the Dark sky. It roared and thundered angrily around as if someone was on a training flight. I could almost hear a voice say ... "And this is the throttle .. WOAH !"

There was a fair amount of shingle tonight, so the finds were OK, bearing in mind it was a torchlit search.

Funny how the greens and browns seem to be more prominent on torchlit searches.

6 FEB. 2017 SEATON CAREW ....

Monday, so no lifts to do.
It was straight to Beach after work.
Chilly day .. it was minus 2 this morning along the Seafront.

Nothing flash on the finds front but I like the wing and the two scroll design pieces of Sea Pottery.

I have too much glass and pot from my many Beach visits, so I am thinking of contacting local Art School to see if anyone needs some for a project etc.....free of charge.

SEATON SANDS, SEATON CAREW, HARTLEPOOL 05-02-17.

Once again it was an afterwork Beach walk, at least this one was in daylight.
The Beach bore the signs of thousands of footprints.
It had been a canny day on the weather front and Seaton Carew itself was still busy as I drove from work at 3-30.
I arrived at the Beach about 4 p.m.
The Beach seemed fairly quiet by then.
People where either heading to their cars our one of the numerous Fish and Chip Shops on the front.

The tide was well out.

I came across this heart; flush with the sand.

Pot and stone finds.....

Glass finds....

One tired Dog; Job done!

SEATON SANDS 03-02-17.

Another torchlit walk on the Beach.
As with last night, it was around high tide.
The car had shown the temperature to be 7 but it felt much colder with the strong wind.
I like the design of the green piece and it's faded colour.
I wonder what the story is about the Gentleman in the blue suit?

SEATON SANDS 02 02 17.

It was another torchlit Beach walk.
By the time I reached the water's edge it was two minutes after high tide.
I wasn't expecting to find much, what with the high tide and the fact that a strong wind had blown lots of sand along the Beach from the Dunes. The dry dune sand sticks to the wet Beach and forms a type of crust over the Beach's scatter.
I  walked just a foot or so from the water's edge and the incoming waves did a great job of washing away the wind blown sand.
As I walked back along the Beach a small strong stream of sea water had formed behind a shingle / sand bank that was eventually being exposed by the receding tide.
I had found a small piece of white pottery and I tossed this into the fast flowing stream as I walked along.
The piece of pottery almost kept up with me, travelling along the Beach as the gush of the water flipped and tossed the small sherd alongside me. I watched it's progress by torchlight.
The stream seemed to be a scale model of the sea itself, tumbling glass and pottery
around for many years until
deciding to set it free on the sand.
Four torchlights headed my way; it was The German Shepard Owners Club with their Hi Vis uniform that they where most of the year around. We passed silently in the darkness and their dogs with their flashy but not flashy collars kept their distance.
The strong wind was blowing from the South. It was very mild.
As I headed back to the car I picked my little dog up for a carry to the car, as we had left the water's edged were crossing the full blast of the wind and the sand that it carried. For me the sand was knee high and that is higher than the Dog, he was  getting blasted.

01 FEB. 2017. SEATON SANDS, HARTLEPOOL.

IT WAS ANOTHER TORCHLIT BEACH WALK TONIGHT.
ONE OF THE TORCHES I USE IS PARTICULARLY BRIGHT AND AT TIMES I STOP IN THE DARKNESS TO SHINE LIGHT ON WHAT WOULD HAVE BEEN UNSEEN WAVES FORMING, MAKING A CREST AND EVENTUALLY BREAKING ONTO THE BEACH.

AS YOU MAY SEE, I DID A BIT OF A BEACH TDY.
A BROKEN CRAB OR LOBSTER POT
AND A SEPARATE LENGTH OF ROPE WITH A NASTY NOOSE TYPE KNOT ON THE END.

I MANAGED TO FIND A FEW PIECES IN THE  GLOOM.
THE TIDE WAS FAIRLY HIGH BUT LUCKILY THE SEA HAD  LEFT A LONG PATCH OF SHINGLE, RAISED SLIGHTLY AND RUNNING NORTH TO SOUTH.

IT WAS NICE TO GET A PICTURE PIECE OF POTTRY WITH THE TWO LOVERS ON.
LEGEND HAS IT THE LOVERS BECAME BIRDS AFTER THEIR DEATH.

29 JAN. 2017. SEATON SANDS, HARTLEPOOL.

IT WAS AN AFTER WORK WALK.
THE SKY OVER THE TOWN LOOKED FANTASTIC ESPECIALLY AFTER SPENDING THE DAY IN A FACTORY.
I LOVED THE SMALL PUFFS OF WHITE CLOUD.

IN CONTRAST THE SKY OVER THE SEA HAD A HINT OF PINK AND YELLOW AS THE DAY STARTED PACKING IT'S BAGS FOR THE NIGHT AHEAD.

THE HIGH TIDE WAS JUST ON THE TURN SO THE BEACH VISITORS WERE FORCED TO SHARE THE STRAND LINE.

A WHITE HEART.

SOME SEA WORN WOODEN ITEM.

SOMEONE HAD HAD FUN EARLIER IN THE DAY BY BUILDING A BRIDGE ACROSS A GAP IN THE SAND DUNES.
SAFE WORKING LOAD; UNKNOWN.

PLASTIC NURDLES ON THE STRAND LINES, THESE WERE SCOOPED UP AND BINNED.

HE WAS RELUCTANT TO TURN BACK
I KNEW HOW HE FELT BUT A HOT BATH WAS CALLING. AND LIGHT WAS FADING.
AS WE GOT BACK TO THE CAR THE LIGHT HAD GONE AND I COULD SEE THE TORCHLIGHT OF THE BEACH NIGHTSHIFT WORKING THEIR WAY ALONG THE SANDS.

28 JAN. 2017, SEATON SANDS AND NORTH GARE BEACH.

The tide has just turned and was heading back in.
It was a dull morning with a hint of rain.
The amount of shingle made me hopeful of finds.

I headed towards the North Gare and looked back at an almost empty beach. The strips of shingle can be seen in the distance.

There was plenty of shingle down by the North Gare and this Codd Bottle Sea Alley shone like a diamond in the dull morning gloom.

Another one!
This time a proper kids marble type sea alley.

And another Codd Bottle sea alley.

I crossed over to the North Gare Beach aka The Blue Lagoon.
A ship slipped into port down the River Tees.

The Blue Lagoon was edged by a ring of Seacoal
and.........

a total of around 50 dead starfish.

An old beached Buoy quietly corrodes down by the River mouth.

I never usually find much over near the Tees but the recent storm surge had changed the beach landscape a little.
There was lots of shingle patches to explore, one of them turned up this little beauty glass bottle stopper.

I crossed back over to the Seaton Carew side of the Pier, with two dogs in tow. I found this tied bag down amongst the shingle.
I placed it down to photograph and examine. I thought I could feel a large coin inside the bag?
I noticed the string was nylon , so I knew then that the contents could be fairly recent.

Contents.
1. Plastic toy.
2. A 1967 threepenny coin.
3. A 1977 Queen's Jubilee Coin.

#2minutebeachclean

The pot finds from today with a couple of pieces of clay pipe stems.

Coins, glass, alleys and a bottle top.

Another book landed on the doorway today for the world's most reluctant reader, aka ME.
